WHAT IS A PERSONAL HEALTH BUDGET

A Personal Health Budget (PHB) is a sum of money provided to you directly to assist with the healthcare needs of your child/children, as agreed upon by you and your local NHS team. It is the same funding that would typically be allocated through your current care provider, but instead, it is given directly to you. Therefore, it is not additional funding. This money enables you to oversee the care and support of your child/children in a manner that is suitable for you, your family, and your child/children.

Generally, Personal Health Budgets (PHBs) are primarily used to meet the care needs of children. However, it is advisable to inquire with your local Integrated Care Board (ICB) to find out what specific services they can provide. Legally, you are becoming a registered employer, and will assume the responsibilities of an employer but will not receive any payment yourself. Personal Health Budgets place a significant amount of responsibility on parents or caregivers. However, they also offer great advantages such as flexibility, continuity, and control.

The purpose of a Personal Health Budget (PHB) is to provide you with increased control, flexibility, and improved outcomes in meeting your child's healthcare needs. It aligns with the vision of a patient-centered NHS. If you are eligible for a PHB, you and your NHS team will collaborate to create a personalised care and support plan that outlines the specifics of your PHB.

Personal Health Budgets (PHBs) are subject to ongoing monitoring by the local council and the Integrated Care Board  (ICB). This monitoring involves reviewing bank statements and invoices to ensure that the funds are being utilized appropriately. It is crucial to understand that if the funds are misused, you may lose the privilege of having a PHB. However, when used correctly, a PHB can provide you with the necessary care without the limitations imposed by a care provider
